Greetings Chargers!

I want to thank everyone who was able to participate in last week's 68th Annual May Fair Event!  Aside from the heat, it was a beautiful day and our students did a tremendous job!  Huge thanks to our parent volunteers and everyone who came out to enjoy the event! The final few weeks will be full of special events, class trips, and end-of-year celebrations.  

  • This Thursday, May 25th is our Spring 4th-5th Grade Concert and parents are welcome to attend at 1:45 pm. Our students are busy preparing and practicing for their final performance of the year!  We hope you can attend or watch from home!  The concert will be LIVE STREAMED on our You Tube Channel.  CFE-TV YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdrxMdy48mf1birFTaLtM2Q
  • Thursday evening, our CFE Reading Olympics Team will be participating at West Chester East H.S. as part of the Reading Olympics Competition.  Mrs. Carson and her team have been preparing our 3 teams of 4th and 5th grade students and we are ready to bring home some blue ribbons!
  • Friday, May 26th our 5th grade will enjoy their day at Brandywine Picnic Park for their annual 5th grade celebration!

What a wonderful May Fair we had! The PTO wants to send a special thank you to everyone who helped support our special Maypole Dance. Thank you Kara Hyman, Christina McHugh, Megan Davis, Kim Regan, Rhonda Rakow, and Rhea Thomas. We also want to thank our wonderful staff: Jeanine McCloskey, Craig Ellis, Stanley Jones, Bill Hirt, and Chris Judd. Lastly, special thanks to our 4th grade helpers: Stella Tucker and Ali Roberts! You helped make Maypole successful!

Chadds Ford Elementary is accepting donations of school supplies for our sister school, Mitchell Elementary, through the last day of school.  Please consider donating any of the following gently used/unused items:

  • Marble Notebooks

  • Book bags (always in short supply)

Mitchell serves a K-8 student body made up entirely of children from households below the poverty line, with many children struggling with permanent or transitional homelessness. The school has been incredibly appreciative of all of the support from CFES this year.

The Flaming Phoenix FTC robotics team from Unionville High School will be hosting an information session about FIRST robotics including FIRST Junior Lego League, FIRST Lego League (FLL), and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) on Wednesday May 24th from 6:30 to 8:00pm in the Hillendale Elementary School LGI.  

These programs provide excellent STEM opportunities for students from Kindergarten through Seniors in High School.  We will be discussing the programs and starting to form teams for next year.  This information session is intended for both students and parents.  Note that this program is 100% parent driven, so if you want to guarantee your child is involved, come to the meeting to find out more about how to start a team.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Chargers!

I want to thank everyone who was able to participate in last week's Spring Open House.  I hope that you enjoyed seeing your child's work in their classroom and the beautiful art work in our hallways.  I also hope that you had a chance to engage in some of the Makerspace activities and STEM projects in our gymnasium.  

We are looking forward to this Friday's 68th Annual May Fair event!  We are hoping for nice weather and are preparing for a great event.  Below are some friendly reminders.   

68th Annual May Fair 2017:

  • Each grade will perform a song. 3rd Graders perform the Traditional May Pole Dance and Parachute Party
  • The performances begin at 2:00 pm on the playground behind the school. Please DO NOT enter the front doors of the school.  Walk around the back of the school.  A space will be provided for parents. 
  • Please bring your own lawn chairs!  Chairs will be limited so please bring one of your own. 
  • Students should wear their CFE Spirit Wear to school on this day.  Since we will be outside, sunscreen is also recommended for all students!                                                                                                                                               
  • Students will travel home on the buses.  If you plan to attend the event and would like to take your child home with you, a parent or guardian will need to sign the student out in his or her classroom.  A note is not necessary, but we do ask that only one parent enter the school to minimize the number of adults in the building.  This year we are working to manage the traffic at the conclusion of the fair to make the dismissal process more efficient.

PTO NEWS AND NOTES

We have had a great 2016/2017 and we are very thankful for all of our parents that have been involved with the PTO.  We have filled many of our chairs/committees for next year (2017/2018) but we still need have a few to fill!  The following positions are still available.  

PTO Vice -President:    The Vice-Presidents assist the Presidents and are responsible for the recruitment or nomination of candidates for the PTO Executive Board members for that year.                          

Typically Vice-Presidents move to the President's position after his or her term expires.  We currently have one VP for next year and are looking for another!!!EndFragment

Art Show Co-Chair: We have one chair and we need another plus many committe chairs!!!  Our PTO's primary source of revenue, the art show and sale features work from local and regional artists.                      30% of sales goes to the PTO.  Chairs help oversee all committee and volunteers.  This event requires many volunteers and committee chairs to promote the event, solicit food and raffle donations, coordinate with artists, print programs, decorate the school, and support the actual event.

Hospitality:We need committee members to help our hospitality chair with teacher appreciation week and new student events    

Talent Show Chairs:    Co-chairs work together to organize volunteers, and coordinate every part of this show which will be run in Jan/Feb.  Co-chairs run tryouts, practices and all aspects of the actual event.

4th Grade Event: Work with parents from other schools to plan this district wide party held in tentatively in March.

Square One Art: Manages all aspects of this fall activity, including coordinating with CFES's Art teacher, collecting student orders, and overseeing distribution of finished items.

Curriculum Council:    Curriculum Council is a group of parents, teachers and administrative staff that meets about 4 times per year to review the curriculum for the district.

Focus Rep:Serves as the CFES representative to Family Outreach Committee of the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, a District-wide, parent network committee to promote healthy choices and behaviors for all youth in our school district though information and education.  

UCF Education Rep:     Serves as the CFES representative to the UCEF (Unionville-Chadds Ford Educational Foundation) a non-profit, charitable organization that raises and appropriates money for     educational projects within the District

Assembly Coordinator:  Work with the school to select and coordinate assemblies

Fifth Grade Leave Behind:     Work with principal and the students to create a lasting memory to leave in the school.

We also have our PTO happy hour coming up next Thursday, May 25th at 6:30 at Brandywine Prime.  Come out to celebrate a great 2016/2017 school year!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Chargers!

Once again, I want to thank your tremendous PTO for a fantastic year!  We had our final meeting last week, and we have begun planning for the 17-18 school year.  I believe there are still some openings to lead and support events for next year.  Please consider getting more involved if you can!

Friendly Reminder! Our annual Spring Open House is this Wednesday, May 10th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.  Our Open House is a great opportunity to visit your child's classroom and see all of the great work they have been doing, peruse the CFE halls and take in all of the beautiful and creative art work, and visit our gymnasium to learn about some of our great S.T.E.M. initiatives.   We have some awesome S.T.E.M. based projects, interactive activities, and demonstrations planned for you.  See attached flyer for more details.

Our 68th Annual MAY FAIR is this Friday, May 12th!  We are hoping for great weather!  Keep your fingers crossed! Please see attached flyer for more details.

PTO NEWS AND NOTES

We had out last board meeting on Wednesday May 3rd. In addition to hearing from John Sanville, we approved new PTO by-laws and we voted in three new positions. Our new recording secretary, communication secretary, and treasurer for the 2017/2018 school year have been approved. Thank you to our current board members who will be rolling off next year. Kristen Goodman, Anna Marcotte, and Wendy Bomberger have served our school and our children for two years. Thank you so much for everything you have done, you will be missed.

Teacher appreciation week was a hit! The teachers and staff members really enjoyed their week of recognition and thanks. Thank you to Patty Kutz, Katherine Lombardo, Naiara Xavier, Kim DeFelice for running the event. Additionally, thank you to all the parents who contributed food and time to help making this event successful. It was truly an example of how supportive our parent community is. The teacher appreciation team needs your help next year. Please reach out to Patty Kutz (pattykutz@gmail.com) if you are interested in helping!

May fair is this Friday, May 12th at 2pm. All the volunteers and children have been working hard at this Chadds Ford Elementary time honored event! Please come out and support one of our last school events for the year.

Also, don't forget, if you have expenses to submit to the PTO please have your requests submitted by June 1st. This will ensure a timely reimbursement.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Chargers!

I am happy to be back to CFE!  You may have learned that I had a very unexpected medical issue that required me to be out of the building for two weeks following the spring break.  I am thrilled to be back at work!  I want to thank you for your support, patience, and well wishes while I was out.  We have a tremendous support system at UCFSD and CFE was in great hands.  I do want to follow up regarding an email that was sent out communicating a water sample violation.  Our water is tested monthly and under the Department of Environmental Protection, the testing is more comprehensive than even purified or bottled water that many of us consume regularly.  With each test, our water quality continues to meet all criteria and requirements.  Without question, it is safe.  This violation was due to an error in the number of samples collected, and easily corrected.  The violation in no way reflects our quality of water at CFE.  Coincidentally, all of the UCFSD buildings are moving to adding water bottle filling stations throughout the schools.  The objective is to provide students with filtered water and a very easy way to refill water bottles.  The water bottle filling stations benefit and support both student health and environmental stewardship.  Our CFE water bottle filling stations should be installed over the coming summer and ready for the 17-18 school year.  Big thanks to the PTO for their support!

This Wednesday, we have our final PTO meeting for the school year.  I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our PTO Board for their tremendous efforts this year.  Co-Presidents, Kara Hyman and Dana Cellucci did a fantastic job leading the PTO.  Huge thanks to our VP, Renee Carroll, Recording Secretary, Anna Marcotte, Treasurer, Wendy Bomberger, and Corresponding Secretary, Kristen Goodman!  I want to thank everyone who took on leadership roles for school fundraisers and activities and everyone who supported the PTO in any capacity this year.   We are very fortunate to have such a supportive community!  THANK YOU!

A huge thanks as well to the PTO for spoiling us for Teacher Appreciation Week!  Our staff is excited for the amazing treats coming our way!  THANK YOU!!!

"GET READY FOR THE TEENAGE YEARS"

Learn how to prepare for the transition from Elementary School to Middle School. This hour long presentation will cover what a typical Unionville-Chadds Ford student's behavior looks like, risk and protective factors, and tips to positively impact your child during the transition. 

    •    What: FREE Parent Workshop

    •    When: Monday, May 8, 2017 from 7:00 - 8:30PM (with time for questions)

    •    Where: Hillendale Elementary School - Auditorium, 1850 Hillendale Road, Chadds Ford, PA 19317

    •    Who: Parents, Caregivers, Teachers, School Administrators, Coaches, Community Members, etc.

    •    Presented by: Kathy Collier - Prevention Specialist, Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services

Details: Pennsylvania Area Youth Survey (PAYS) data specific to Unionville Chadds-Ford School District will be presented. PAYS data measures several different areas in regards to Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, and Gambling use and access, risk and    protective factors, antisocial behavior, social and emotional health, attitudes and perceptions, and school climate and safety. PAYS data serves as a phenomenal resource for parents and caregivers to gain insight into their child's life.

It is hard to believe but we will be holding our last PTO meeting of the year on Wednesday, May 3rd at 9:15am  Dr. Sanville will be joining us to discuss some district topics.  We also will be approving our new by-laws and conducting our 2017/18 board election plus much more!!   See attached agenda.   

This week is also TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK!  We are SO LUCKY to be surrounded by such wonderful teachers and staff at Chadds Ford.  The PTO has a wonderful luncheon planned for our teachers this Friday as well as some goodies to be provided throughout the week.   Thank you to all of our parents who have donated items and also to those who will donate their time this week.   But especially a BIG THANK YOU to all of our teachers and staff here at CFE who do so much for our children and our school.  

Please also mark your calendars for our next happy hour on Thursday, May 25th at Brandywine Prime beginning at 6:30.  More information to come but it is a great way to come out meet old friends and new friends and hear more about what the PTO has to offer.

LAST CALL FOR UNIONVILLE-CHADDS FORD COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP DONATIONS 

For over 50 years, the Unionville-Chadds Ford Community Scholarship Fund has provided scholarship aid to outstanding graduating seniors at Unionville High School.

The Community Scholarship is a grant of a stated amount of money collected annually from the school community by open solicitation. Its purpose is to award the worthy student who wishes to continue his/her education following graduation from Unionville High School. The grant is for the first year of post-secondary work only and will be applied toward college costs (i.e., tuition, room and board). As many grants will be made annually as the treasury of the Community Scholarship can support. Please consider contributing to the Unionville-Chadds Ford Community Scholarship Fund.

Hot off the press! CFE has a new Office Manager...but it will be a friendly face! As of Monday evening, Jeanine McCloskey was approved by the school board for hire as our new Office Manager.  Our interview team believes that Jeanine has the right experience and the right personality to lead our office.  Over the last few weeks, Jeanine has been working very hard to oversee both positions, but now she can finally transition into her new role.  Jeanine's transition will create a vacancy with our front office/attendance secretary, and that position will soon be posted. Please join me in congratulating Jeanine in moving into her new role! 

May is coming!  May is coming!  From parent training opportunities and our spring house to our 68th Annual May Fair, the month of May is a crazy busy month!  Please mark you calendars for the many events coming your way!

Our annual Spring Open House is Wednesday, May 10th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.  Our Open House is a great opportunity to visit your child's classroom and see all of the great work they have been doing, peruse the CFE halls and take in all of the beautiful and creative art work, and visit our gymnasium to learn about some of our great S.T.E.M. initiatives.  

We have PSSA testing this week.  Our 3rd-5th grade students will be testing from Monday through Wednesday as part of the Mathematics portion of the PSSA.  The PSSA is not restricted by time, but generally students take between 90-120 minutes each day.  The adapted schedule has resulted in our first and second grade students having their special during the morning rather than the afternoon.  So, our elementary world gets a bit turned upside down next week again!  

Upcoming Parent Training Opportunities:

Learn how to prepare for the transition from Elementary School to Middle School. This hour long presentation will cover what a typical Unionville-Chadds Ford student's behavior looks like, risk and protective factors, and tips to positively impact your child during the transition. 

    •    What: FREE Parent Workshop

    •    When: Monday, May 8, 2017 from 7:00 - 8:30PM (with time for questions)

    •    Where: Hillendale Elementary School - Auditorium, 1850 Hillendale Road, Chadds Ford, PA 19317

    •    Who: Parents, Caregivers, Teachers, School Administrators, Coaches, Community Members, etc.

    •    Presented by: Kathy Collier - Prevention Specialist, Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services

    •    Details: Pennsylvania Area Youth Survey (PAYS) data specific to Unionville Chadds-Ford School District will be presented. PAYS data measures several different areas in regards to Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, and Gambling use and access, risk and protective factors, antisocial behavior, social and emotional health, attitudes and perceptions, and school climate and safety. PAYS data serves as a phenomenal resource for parents and caregivers to gain insight into their child's life.

PTO NEWS AND NOTES

Our last PTO meeting of the year is next week, Wednesday May 3rd at 9:15am. Here is the agenda (ATTACHED). We have a lot to cover!

One of our top agenda items will be to review and approving our new by-laws (ATTACHED). If you would like to review the draft bylaws, questions can be submitted to Kara Hyman or Dana Cellucci prior to the PTO meeting. We hope to review and approve these quickly at the meeting. 

We will also be reviewing and approving new board members. If you would like to submit your name for a position on the ballot, please send your request to Dana Cellucci: danacellucci_@hotmail.com before  Monday May 1st. The CFES PTO looks forward to working with new and fresh faces. 

Lastly, we want to take this opportunity to remind our parents and staff to submit your PTO expenses by June 1st. This will ensure a timely reimbursement.

Mark your calendars! There will be a happy hour on Thursday May 25th 2017 at Brandywine Prime starting at 6:30pm. More information will be sent out as we get closer!

LAST CALL FOR UNIONVILLE-CHADDS FORD COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP DONATIONS 

For over 50 years, the Unionville-Chadds Ford Community Scholarship Fund has provided scholarship aid to outstanding graduating seniors at Unionville High School.

The Community Scholarship is a grant of a stated amount of money collected annually from the school community by open solicitation. Its purpose is to award the worthy student who wishes to continue his/her education following graduation from Unionville High School. The grant is for the first year of post-secondary work only and will be applied toward college costs (i.e., tuition, room and board). As many grants will be made annually as the treasury of the Community Scholarship can support. Please consider contributing to the Unionville-Chadds Ford Community Scholarship Fund.

NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL!

You can have your student drop off the donation to the High School Office in an envelope marked UCF Community Scholarship. We accept cash, change or if you would like, a check made payable to UCF Community Scholarship Fund.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

 Greetings Chargers!

I hope that everyone had a very relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break!  Its amazing that we are nearly into the month of May!

The RUN for our SONS 5K is this coming Saturday!  We raised $530 so far for Team CFES Chargers! That means I will be in fact be wearing a pink tutu during the run!  Yikes!  There are still a few days to go, so please considering joining our team or donating to this great cause!  Link:http://www.parentprojectmd.org/site/TR/Events/General/989542552?pg=team&fr_id=4502&team_id=12775 

Please SAVE the DATE!  We are hosing our annual Spring Open House on Wednesday, May 10th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm!  This year we will have a S.T.E.M. showcase in our gymnasium!  Check out the flyer for more details!

We will pick up with PSSA testing next week!  Our 3rd-5th grade students will test on Monday through Wednesday next week as part of the Mathematics portion of the PSSA.  The PSSA is not restricted by time, but generally students take between 90-120 minutes each day.  The adapted schedule has resulted in our first and second grade students having their special during the morning rather than the afternoon.  So, our elementary world gets a bit turned upside down next week again!

Why not encourage your child to write and illustrate their own book?  The National Youth Foundation is sponsoring a great contest!  They are working with Robert Covington of the Philadelphia Sixers and Jordan Hicks of the Philadelphia Eagles to launch the Student Book Scholars contest (students K-8).  Under the supervision of a teacher/parent/project coordinator, students in the Greater Philadelphia area are invited to work in teams of 3 to 10 to write, edit and illustrate their own books!  Mr. Covington and Mr. Hicks will select the overall two winning teams!  The creative process of working in teams helps provide a natural environment to practice editing, teamwork and communication skills necessary for future success.  The winners and the volunteer coordinator will receive cool prizes and both winning books will be published and distributed to local libraries!  All information can be found here: https://nationalyouthfoundation.org/

MITCHELL UPDATE 

Thanks once again to the Charger community!  Together for our sister school, Mitchell Elementary, we've collected 60 boxes of tissues, 33 sticks of deodorant, 10 rolls of paper towel, 7 new backpacks, 4 rolls of sanitizer wipes, 12 bottles of hand sanitizer, 12 pairs of uniform khaki pants, and 12 short-sleeved button-down shirts for the Men of Mitchell program.  I look forward to dropping them off tomorrow morning.
