PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Greetings Parents!

I regularly receive a great deal of positive feedback from our parents and community regarding the special attention they receive from our teachers and staff. I hope you agree that we have a highly talented and dedicated group of professionals here at CFE who work extremely hard to foster the best experience possible for your child. Educators choose teaching because of their love of children and the chance to influence the future. The greatest award in teaching comes with students learning and growing -- socially, emotionally, and academically. It is a rare situation that allows us to publicly recognize the efforts, dedication, and skills that make our staff so special. If you feel as I do, please consider nominating one or more of our teachers for the Citadel Heart of Learning Award! Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

We will be launching our Fall Conference online scheduling this Wednesday, October 18th. Please keep an eye out for an email from me. Fall conferences are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, November 20th and 21st. We continue to utilize an online conference scheduling program called PTCfast for parents to self-select conference times. Keep a look out for the email and conference link!

Friendly Reminders:

  • There is a ton going on this month! CFE has a number of before- and after-school opportunities starting this month. Robotics 1.0, Cooking with Science, and Foreign Language courses are all beginning soon! If you missed the registration, or if the schedule was not conducive for your family, please know that many more after-school courses will be offered throughout the school year. Stay tuned!
  • Our annual Halloween Parade is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31st at 9:30 a.m.
  • Just a heads up, school is closed this Thursday, October 19th for Staff Professional Development.

As always, thank you for your support!

Best regards,
Shawn Dutkiewicz, CFE Principal

PTO NEWS AND NOTES

Greetings CFE Families!

We are still in need of a few key PTO positionsTalent Show Committee Chair and Art Show Co-Chair are two very important positions for the 2017/2018 school year. Please reach out to us if you are interested.

Next week has a lot of activity for CFE!

Book Fair dates are October 23rd, 24th, 25th, and the morning of the 26th.

  • Please consider helping the children shop for books. It's truly a cute event for the kids; they love seeing their parents there to help them shop!
  • Thank you to all the parents who have already signed up to contribute to the Book Fair Raffle Baskets!
  • The first week of our Coin Challenge has ended and the jars are quickly filling up! Don’t forget to keep sending in your coins. This week your child can bring in any coins. If we meet our goal, we will be able to make a generous donation of books to Mitchell Elementary.

We are so excited for this fun and educational event!

Donut Day is Thursday, October 26th from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

  • Please RSVP so we can get an accurate count for food.
  • We also just need a few more volunteers to help set up for the event. Please consider helping out!

Finally, our next PTO meeting is Wednesday, November 1st at 9:30 a.m. We will be voting on enrichment grants. Please come and help us decide which projects the PTO will fund!

Thank you,
Kara Hyman and Dana Cellucci, PTO Presidents

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Greetings Parents!

We had a great WIN this past weekend! Mrs. Straub, CFE and HES Reading Specialist, and 5th grade student Tyler Hansen competed in the annual Unionville Community Fair Cow Milking Contest and WON! For the first time ever, CFE is bringing home the coveted MILK JUG trophy to proudly announce the victory! Mrs. Straub and Tyler narrowly pulled out the victory and we could not be more proud of them! Please check out more pictures and a video on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

HUGE THANKS to everyone who contributed gift cards for our friends in Houston! In the end, we collected a total of $705 in Target gift cards. The gift cards, along with notes of encouragement, were shipped out on Friday. THANK YOU for your generosity and thoughtfulness!

2nd-5th Grade Parents: Keep an eye on your mailbox for your child's GRADE/GMADE results, which will be sent out this week. All 3rd-5th grade students took a nationally normed, standards-based reading (GRADE) and math (GMADE) assessment in September to help us collect baseline data for the year. All 2nd grade students took just the math (GMADE) assessment. A brief description of each assessment and your child's results will be arriving to your home this week via “snail” mail.

There is a ton going on this month! Stay tuned!

Our annual Halloween Parade is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31st at 9:30 a.m.

As always, thank you for your support!

PTO NEWS AND NOTES

Greetings CFE Families!

Just a few reminders:

We would like to close our Booster Drive this Friday, October 13th. Thank you to those families who have already contributed. We are at less than half of our 2016/2017 total, with only about 50 of our families contributing. Our PTO provides support to enrich our children’s educational experiences at CFE. A few years ago we eliminated secondary fundraisers (e.g., gift wrap) and began encouraging contributions to our Booster Program.

  • Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to our Booster Drive, or you can just send in your donation via Backpack Express in an envelope marked PTO Booster (checks should be made payable to CFE PTO). Thank you for all of your support!

Last week we sent out an email with date changes for the Book Fair and Donut Day.

  • We are so excited for our Wild West Book Fair October 23rd to 27th! You should have received information about our Book Fair Coin Challenge, and your children will be bringing home a lot more information about the fair and fun events associated with it in the coming weeks. We are also rounding up volunteers to help out with book sales.
  • Donut Day is Thursday October 26th. Make sure you mark your calendar and come enjoy a fun-filled CFE tradition with your children. A few volunteer spots are still available if you’d like to help set up.

If you are planning to volunteer for school events, please ensure your volunteer clearances are up-to-date and on file with the school office prior to your volunteer date. Visit the UCFSD website for more information. You will not be permitted to volunteer without current clearances.

Lastly, author Peter Catalanotto will be coming to CFE October 24th. A form to order books for him to autograph should have come home with your children; these forms are due back to school by October 16th.

Again, we still have a few positions open for this year's big events.

  • Art Show needs a co-chair, as well as some committee chairs. This is Nichole Scull’s second year as chair and she needs some help. This is our biggest fundraiser for the year; please consider helping us!

  • We need help for the Talent Show. We will not be able to have the show if we can't find people to lead this event.

  • We also are in need of a Curriculum Council Representative. This district-wide group (parents, teachers, curriculum director) meets three to four times a year and provides feedback on our current curriculum.

Please reach out to us if you’re interested.

Thank you!
Kara Hyman and Dana Cellucci, PTO Presidents

Greetings Parents!

HUGE THANKS to everyone who contributed gift cards for our friends in Houston! In total, we collected $665 in Target gift cards! The gift cards, along with notes of encouragement, are all being shipped to Houston this week. We have asked for some pictures to share with all of you when they arrive and are distributed. Once again, THANK YOU for your generosity and thoughtfulness!

Last Friday, we had some special guests from a local high school. The Back to Bach Project came to CFE to play and present to our 3rd-5th grade students. Not only were the students amazing musicians, the information behind the music, as well as their message of perseverance and hard work, was a great way to end our first month of school. I hope your child came home sharing about the assembly!

Friendly reminder: In support of UHS Homecoming, CFE will have a Spirit Week of our own this week! Let’s support our friends at UHS and have fun with the spirit days!

  • Monday: Sports Day (favorite jersey or T-shirt)
  • Tuesday: Crazy Hat/Socks Day
  • Wednesday: Patriotic Day (Red, White, and Blue)
  • Thursday: Blue/Gold Day
  • Friday: Mismatch Day

One other friendly reminder: Next Monday, October 9th there is NO SCHOOL.

As always, thank you for your support!

Hello CFE Families and Happy Fall!

Our next PTO meeting is Wednesday, October 4th (tomorrow) at 9:30 a.m. Here is a copy of our agenda. All CFE families are invited; we would love to have you attend!

Our Booster Drive will end October 13th! Please consider a $25 contribution.

Lastly, we still have a few positions open for this year's big events. Art Show needs a co-chair to join Nichole Scull. This is her second year and she needs some help! This is our biggest fundraiser for the year; please consider helping us! We also need help for the Talent Show. We will not be able to have the show if we can't find people to lead this event. Please reach out to us if you’re interested.

Back-to School Drive for Mitchell Elementary:

  • Thank you CFE Chargers for your overwhelmingly generous contributions for the Mitchell Back-to-School Drive! The CFE community collected more than 60 book bags, 100 uniform pieces, and a large bin full of new underwear. The staff and students at Mitchell were thrilled to receive the donations. Thank you so much for your generosity - it's making a huge impact on our sister school! Contact Sara Krausz with any questions.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Parents!

A big shout out to our PTO for organizing another great Fall Festival Friday evening! The PTO coordinators, Ai Huynh, Christina Montinola, Heather Harr, and Sara Parambil deserve a big round of applause!

Huge thanks to all of our parents, staff, and student volunteers who made it all possible. Special thanks to Mr. Wagner, Mrs. DeNenno, Mr. Barr, and Mr. Sciecinski for braving the cold wrath of the dunk tank! And special thanks to the Huynh family for donating the pizza, the Ritz family for donating the gourds, and Acme for donating the cupcakes, cookies, and apple cider. In the end, it was a great PTO fundraiser and great fun for our kids!

Thank you PTO for donating the remaining pumpkins and mums to CFE. We are really enjoying the fall décor!

Last week, our students participated in Chester County Walk Walks! During P.E. classes, students spent time walking and calculating their steps to support the cause. With the help and encouragement of our P.E. teachers, Mr. Judd and Miss Marsh, our students walked a total of 180 miles! Great job kiddos! If you are interested, you and your family can register on the Chester County website and log your steps to support the cause.

In support of UHS Homecoming, CFE will have a Spirit Week of our own starting next Monday, October 2. Let’s support our friends at UHS and have fun with the spirit days!

  • Monday: Sports Day (favorite jersey or T-shirt)
  • Tuesday: Crazy Hat/Socks Day
  • Wednesday: Patriotic Day (Red, White, and Blue)
  • Thursday: Blue/Gold Day
  • Friday: Mismatch Day

We are still collecting $10 and $20 gift cards to Target and Walmart to support our friends in Houston for one final week! As of last Friday, we have collected a total of $500 in gift cards! This is a great opportunity to talk to your child about service to others and guide him or her in being part of a donation. Perhaps that means doing extra chores around the house or donating part of their allowance? Perhaps it means writing a card of encouragement or giving something up that they normally expect to receive? We want our students to experience the value of service and we appreciate the extra efforts to help our friends in Houston!

As always, thank you for your support!

Best regards,
Shawn Dutkiewicz, CFE Principal

A huge thank you to our wonderful chairs Ai Huynh, Christina Montinola, and Sara Parambil. We appreciate all the hard work and planning that went into making this a fun-filled family event!

Finally, thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to set up, collect money, supervise the three-on-three basketball, work the food tables, help with the games and crafts, and clean up at the end. We could not have done it without you!

Thank you!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Parents!

It’s hard to believe that we are starting our third week of school, and our first full week for that matter! As always, things are moving very fast!

As you would expect, the start of a new year includes a great deal of introductory and team-building activities. It is my hope that your child is coming home and sharing the great things that are happening in his or her classroom each day.

From my visits and observations, I am seeing and hearing a lot about grit and perseverance. We spend a good amount of time implementing the growth mindset here at CFE and it’s one of our main goals to build resilience and stamina with our students. Please echo these messages at home, and together we can help students become more comfortable with struggle and failure.

Speaking of grit, this brief TED Talk from Angela Duckworth is worth a look!

Outside of our climate-building exercises, we are also working on assessing students and establishing baseline data for the school year. Your child may tell you that he or she is “taking a lot of tests.” This is not untrue. As we gather baseline data, our assessments help in the placement process for our RTII Reading groups that are scheduled to begin the week of September 25.

We use both formal and informal assessments throughout each week to monitor and adjust our instruction accordingly. Much of this data will be shared with you as we develop our groups and progress through the first trimester.

As you will read below in PTO News and Notes, we have many exciting things coming up! Fall Festival is next on the list, and we hope you and your family will join us Friday, September 22. I can already hear the Dunk Tank calling my name!

As always, thank you for your support!

Best regards,
Shawn Dutkiewicz, CFE Principal

PTO NEWS AND NOTES

Hello CFE Parents!

Thanks to all who attended our first PTO meeting of the 2017/2018 school year. We got a lot accomplished, including the approval of our new Co-VP Jessica Lang, approval of our budget for the school year, and, of course, Shawn’s informational update.

  • Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 4 at 9:30 a.m. Please try to attend, as we will be kicking off our enrichment grant process.
  • Fall Festival is almost here! It will be held at the school Friday, September 22 rain or shine. Please send in your registration forms if you are planning to attend; it would be so helpful to have a good idea who is coming so we have enough food and crafts for everyone. There are still several opportunities to sign up and help.

  • Our annual Booster Drive going on right now. Please consider making a contribution to the PTO. This is our second biggest fundraiser for the year, and we need your help!

  • We still need to fill a few key chair positions for the 2017/2018 school year. The Talent Show and Foreign Language Program are two big PTO-sponsored activities for which we need parent support. Unfortunately, if we do not find anyone to fill these roles, we will not have these events this year. Please reach out to us if you are interested.

Thank you!
Kara Hyman and Dana Cellucci, PTO Presidents

Spirit Wear Orders:

  • This year, students and staff will receive a new maroon-colored 50/50 cotton/polyester blend CFE T-shirt compliments of the PTO. Please order for each child attending CFE.

Back-to-School Drive for Mitchell Elementary:

  • This fall, CFE is participating in a backpack and uniform drive to support our sister school, Mitchell Elementary in southwest Philadelphia. Mitchell serves a K-8 student body made up entirely of children from households below the poverty line, with many children struggling with permanent or transitional homelessness.
  • Please consider donating any of the following to the school and its students:

    • Backpacks (new or gently used)
    • Khaki pants (lightly worn or new in all sizes from 4T to adult sizes)
    • Blue polo shirts (lightly worn or new in all sizes from 4T to adult sizes)
    • Underwear (new)
  • A box for donations will be in the CFE lobby through Friday, September 29. For questions, please contact Sara Krausz. Thank you for your consideration!

Parent Orientation:

  • Huge thanks to everyone who was able to attend our Sneak-A-Peek and Parent Orientations August 24. If you were unable to attend or would like to reference the information that was shared, all teacher presentations should be uploaded on their individual teacher websites.

  • For new families, my orientation presentation is attached and also archived on our website under “announcements.” Please reach out to me with any questions.

New School Start Time Information:

  • Last school year, the UCFSD School Board approved a delayed school start time at all levels in the district. For the elementary buildings, this means our new start time will be 9:10 a.m. Our official school day is 9:10 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. The previous school day was 8:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
