Charger eNews - March 7, 2017

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Chargers!

I want to congratulate our 5th graders who performed their Oldies Dance skits on Friday evening!  They did such a great job!

I also want to congratulate our 5th grade team who competed at the Chester County Intermediate Unit STEM Competition on Friday.  Out of twenty 4th-5th grade teams, CFE finished in 3rd place!  This was only our third year competing and we've learned so much about the process.  Congratulations to our 5th grade team, Michael Ta, Jack Hyman, Rohan Kapoor, and Ethan Lee and our AT Teacher, Mrs. Gehris on a great job!

I want to thank our PTO and the CFES Community for approving all of the grant requests that were submitted and voted on last week.  The grants will fund so many wonderful things!  The PTO funds will support the creation of a safer and more comfortable student-experience in our gaga pit, filtered water bottle-filling stations at three locations in the school, an author visit and workshop with our students, Dash and Dot robots and coding for our computer class and Makerspace, new sound equipment for our band, orchestra, and assembly programs, and new tables for our AT room that will foster student collaboration and teamwork.   Truly amazing stuff...and we are so appreciative!

From the Makerspace Mingle, PTO grants, and through the donations of supplies and materials, the CFE community has been tremendously supportive of the implementation of our CFE Makerspace.  Believe it or not, we are currently at the mid-year mark of our second year of implementation.  With your support, we are much further along in our process than we expected and we are learning so much along the way.  Our implementation plan has included curriculum work to support our teachers in facilitating STEM instruction throughout the building, not only when visiting the Makerspace.  A great deal of funds have been spent on mobilizing our equipment and resources so they can used as tools throughout the school.  Although you may not always hear about your child "going to the Makerspace", we are heavily invested in STEM instruction and using the same resources in our classrooms.  As we continue to learn and grow, I am confident that you will hear much more about how the Makerspace implementation is influencing our pedagogy and educational philosophies and transcending all disciplines and levels of CFE.

March Conferences Reminder: A conference sign-up email was sent last Friday and a letter was also sent home via backpack express.  Please be sure to schedule a conference with your child's teacher. To register and choose a conference time, enter this link into your internet browser: https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Chadds_Ford_Elementary_School. Let us know if you have any questions!

Finally, please be sure to SAVE the DATES...our 68th Annual Art Show and Sale is coming up...Friday, March 24th and Saturday, March 25th!  Please consider volunteering some time to support this tremendous annual CFES tradition!

As always, thank you for your support!

Best Regards,

Mr. Shawn Dutkiewicz

CFES Principal

SPRING ESSENTIALS FOR MITCHELL

Our spring collection drive supports basic but unmet needs at our sister school, Mitchell Elementary in southwest Philadelphia.  As many of us have learned the hard way, flu season is here, and Mitchell has asked for our help in providing the following much-needed items for its student body and teachers:

  • Tissue Boxes
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Paper Towel Rolls
  • Deodorant
  • Bookbags (always in short supply)

Mitchell serves a K-8 student body made up entirely of children from households below the poverty line, with many children struggling with permanent or transitional homelessness. The school has been incredibly appreciative of all of the support from CFES this year.

A box for donations will be in the CFE lobby through Friday, March 31st.  Thank you Charger families!
