PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Parents!

It’s hard to believe that we are starting our third week of school, and our first full week for that matter! As always, things are moving very fast!

As you would expect, the start of a new year includes a great deal of introductory and team-building activities. It is my hope that your child is coming home and sharing the great things that are happening in his or her classroom each day.

From my visits and observations, I am seeing and hearing a lot about grit and perseverance. We spend a good amount of time implementing the growth mindset here at CFE and it’s one of our main goals to build resilience and stamina with our students. Please echo these messages at home, and together we can help students become more comfortable with struggle and failure.

Speaking of grit, this brief TED Talk from Angela Duckworth is worth a look!

Outside of our climate-building exercises, we are also working on assessing students and establishing baseline data for the school year. Your child may tell you that he or she is “taking a lot of tests.” This is not untrue. As we gather baseline data, our assessments help in the placement process for our RTII Reading groups that are scheduled to begin the week of September 25.

We use both formal and informal assessments throughout each week to monitor and adjust our instruction accordingly. Much of this data will be shared with you as we develop our groups and progress through the first trimester.

As you will read below in PTO News and Notes, we have many exciting things coming up! Fall Festival is next on the list, and we hope you and your family will join us Friday, September 22. I can already hear the Dunk Tank calling my name!

As always, thank you for your support!

Best regards,
Shawn Dutkiewicz, CFE Principal

Important Information

Social Media Images:

  • We utilize our Chadds Ford Facebook and Twitter pages to report news, provide reminders, and most often, share the great things that are happening in our classrooms each day. Many of our posts include pictures or videos.
  • If you would prefer that we NOT include your child’s image in our posts, please complete this form. If you do not complete this form, it will be assumed that you approve your child’s image on the Facebook page. Thank you!

Parent Orientation:

  • Huge thanks to everyone who was able to attend our Sneak-A-Peek and Parent Orientations August 24. If you were unable to attend or would like to reference the information that was shared, all teacher presentations should be uploaded on their individual teacher websites.

  • For new families, my orientation presentation is attached and also archived on our website under “announcements.” Please reach out to me with any questions.

New School Start Time Information:

  • Last school year, the UCFSD School Board approved a delayed school start time at all levels in the district. For the elementary buildings, this means our new start time will be 9:10 a.m. Our official school day is 9:10 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. The previous school day was 8:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
  • To support our families, students may enter the building as early as 8:30 a.m. All students will be supervised in our cafeteria and have the opportunity to purchase breakfast, socialize, do homework, and have access to games/activities. Students will be permitted to enter their classrooms at 8:55 a.m.
  • Our building will not be open and will not have staff available for supervision prior to 8:30 a.m.

Parent Training Opportunity:

  • A program focused on Strengthening Families is coming soon. The program is focused on families with children ages 10 to 14.

PTO NEWS AND NOTES

Hello CFE Parents!

Thanks to all who attended our first PTO meeting of the 2017/2018 school year. We got a lot accomplished, including the approval of our new Co-VP Jessica Lang, approval of our budget for the school year, and, of course, Shawn’s informational update.

  • Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 4 at 9:30 a.m. Please try to attend, as we will be kicking off our enrichment grant process.
  • Fall Festival is almost here! It will be held at the school Friday, September 22 rain or shine. Please send in your registration forms if you are planning to attend; it would be so helpful to have a good idea who is coming so we have enough food and crafts for everyone. There are still several opportunities to sign up and help.

  • Our annual Booster Drive going on right now. Please consider making a contribution to the PTO. This is our second biggest fundraiser for the year, and we need your help!

  • We still need to fill a few key chair positions for the 2017/2018 school year. The Talent Show and Foreign Language Program are two big PTO-sponsored activities for which we need parent support. Unfortunately, if we do not find anyone to fill these roles, we will not have these events this year. Please reach out to us if you are interested.

Thank you!
Kara Hyman and Dana Cellucci, PTO Presidents

Spirit Wear Orders:

  • This year, students and staff will receive a new maroon-colored 50/50 cotton/polyester blend CFE T-shirt compliments of the PTO. Please order for each child attending CFE.

Back-to-School Drive for Mitchell Elementary:

  • This fall, CFE is participating in a backpack and uniform drive to support our sister school, Mitchell Elementary in southwest Philadelphia. Mitchell serves a K-8 student body made up entirely of children from households below the poverty line, with many children struggling with permanent or transitional homelessness.
  • Please consider donating any of the following to the school and its students:

    • Backpacks (new or gently used)
    • Khaki pants (lightly worn or new in all sizes from 4T to adult sizes)
    • Blue polo shirts (lightly worn or new in all sizes from 4T to adult sizes)
    • Underwear (new)
  • A box for donations will be in the CFE lobby through Friday, September 29. For questions, please contact Sara Krausz. Thank you for your consideration!
